27. Share The Why.

Before others can understand what to do or how to do it, they must first understand why. Explain the big picture. The more people understand the reason for what we’re doing, the more actively they can participate in the solution.

Pete's Message:

This is one of my favorite fundamentals. In addition to being connected to many of the other 40 fundamentals, ‘Share The Why’ is all about dedication to and application of our core values: Family, Trust, Communication, Teamwork and Continuous Improvement.

In my position I constantly have to ask the why related to investments in people, branches, inventory and assets that deliver sustainable growth in EBT, which should lead to a larger Team Bonus for eligible associates. I also have to listen to associates share the why when an activity requires an investment of our capital. I am always very impressed by the passion and preparation our associates exhibit when Sharing The Why.

I am sure all of you have to Share the Why at some point in your busy day and I believe the most successful Share The Why discussions take place when everyone applies our core values.

SO LETS REMEMBER THAT “SHARING THE WHY”:

Takes remembering that we are FAMILY – and that someone is Sharing the Why because they are trying to do right by the FAMILY.  Whether you agree or disagree remember we are FAMILY.

Takes TRUST in each other that the discussion is about making the company better and disagreement may arise but we are all in this together.

Takes COMMUNICATION that is clear, concise, well-paced, and mutual amongst all parties in order to understand the Why.  We cannot share what we don’t understand and thus COMMUNICATION is key.

Takes TEAMWORK to make the outcome of the discussion come to life to make the company better.

Leads to CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT for the company and our associates.

Have a great Week.

Best.
